The number of diabetes patients is increasing rapidly. In the next three decades, this number will be 130 crores, which will be double as compared to today. This figure of diabetes patients will be almost equal to the current population of India.
A study has been published in the leading medical journal The Lancet regarding the increasing number of diabetes patients. This study is based on death and disability due to diabetes in the period between 1990 and 2021. The data of more than 27 thousand people from 204 countries has been studied. After which researchers have come to the conclusion that by 2050, diabetes will engulf 130 crore people. North Africa and the Middle East and island nations adjacent to the Pacific Ocean are most at risk of spreading the disease. It is possible that one out of every five people is suffering from diabetes. With increasing age, the possibility of falling prey to this disease will be more.
Type 2 cases will accelerate
In both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, the blood sugar level increases significantly. Type 2 disease is caused by insulin resistance and can usually be diagnosed early. Type 1, on the other hand, is an autoimmune disease where the body cannot produce insulin. It usually occurs in childhood or during adolescence. Type 2 diabetes is expected to account for most new cases over the next three decades.
Disability and death due to obesity
The study revealed that obesity is the biggest cause of type 2 diabetes, which is responsible for more than half of the disability and death due to this disease. The study looked at specific risk factors related to obesity, diet, physical activity, environment, occupation, tobacco and alcohol use. Studies have revealed that sufferers are at a higher risk of developing complications such as heart disease, stroke, loss of vision, ulcers in the feet.
