Supreme Court On Sanitary Pad: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday (July 24) a petition seeking to provide free sanitary pads to girls studying in classes 6 to 12. The petition sought directions to the states and the Center to ensure the facility of separate girls’ washrooms in all government-aided and residential schools.
A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra will hear the petition of social activist Jaya Thakur. The court had earlier asked the Center to prepare a standard operating procedure and a national model to be followed by all states and union territories for managing menstrual hygiene for girls studying in schools.
Jaya Thakur said in her petition that there are many teenage girls who are not educated by their families about menstruation. They do not get much information. In such a situation, it is the responsibility of the schools to educate them.
What was the order on menstrual hygiene?
The bench had said in its order, “The Center should coordinate with all the states to see that a uniform national policy is implemented so that it can be implemented effectively with state adjustments.” We direct the Secretaries, Ministry of Health, of all the States and Union Territories to implement the Menstrual Hygiene Policy within four weeks from their own funds.
The petition, filed through advocate Varinder Kumar Sharma, said that inadequate menstrual hygiene management is a major impediment to education. Many girls drop out of school due to lack of access to sanitary facilities, menstrual products and societal attitudes associated with menstruation.
