Saket Gokhale on Manipur Violence: Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP and national spokesperson Saket Gokhale has targeted the BJP and the central government, allegedly referring to an 80-year-old elderly woman who was burnt alive during the Manipur violence. According to media reports, the elderly woman who lost her life was the wife of a freedom fighter. Saket Gokhale has described the incident as shocking.

Saket Gokhale tweeted on Sunday (July 23), “In yet another shocking incident, an 80-year-old woman was burnt alive by a mob in Manipur at her home.” Instead of taking immediate action, the BJP and Modi government are trying to justify the ongoing genocide and ethnic cleansing in Manipur by fabricating fake news and highlighting individual incidents in opposition states.

Accusations on CM N Biren Singh and Modi government

The TMC leader wrote, “BJP has committed unspeakable atrocities against women and tribals under Chief Minister N Biren Singh.” He further wrote, “Modi government promptly deploys central agencies to investigate cases in opposition states but no central agency is even involved in Manipur as these agencies have now become instruments of political vendetta instead of bringing criminals to justice.”

When is the incident of burning the elderly woman?

According to media reports, the elderly woman with whom Saket Gokhale mentioned in his tweet, was executed on May 28 in Serau village of Kakching district. Reportedly Manipur International Youth Center (MIYC) had informed about the incident. The name of the woman who lost her life was Sorokhaibam Ibetombi. All the doors of the house were locked and the woman was found burnt inside.

Freedom fighter husband was honored by the President

In an HT report, quoting some reports, it has been written that S Churachand Singh, the husband of the elderly woman, was a freedom fighter who was also honored by former President APJ Abdul Kalam. The Manipur government or the state police have not given any statement regarding this incident.

Violence started about two and a half months ago

Let us tell you that on July 19, tension spread across the country when a video of an incident of May 4 surfaced on social media, in which a violent mob paraded two women naked and sexually assaulted them.

Violent clashes started in Manipur from 3 May. Violence spread after a tribal unity march was taken out in the hill districts to protest against the demand for ST status by the Meitei community. Since then, more than 150 people have lost their lives in the violence in the state.
