Sri Lanka-India Relations: Several issues were discussed on Friday (July 21) between Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. One of these was also the issue of security. There has been a consensus of both the countries on this.

During the meeting, PM Modi also reminded Ranil Wickremesinghe that India was one of the first countries to respond to the economic crisis that ravaged the island nation in 2022.

Discussion about China!

President Wickremesinghe agreed that Sri Lanka would be sensitive to India’s strategic and security concerns. It is believed that there was an important discussion between the two leaders regarding China. This discussion has taken place at a time when China’s capital Beijing is currently attaching Colombo with the island nation under the Belt Road Initiative (BRI), which is currently ravaged by China’s debt.

Important discussion on bilateral relations

PM Modi said that India will continue on its path of helping Sri Lanka in times of economic crisis. Both the leaders decided to take bilateral relations for a long term with future focus on digital, oil, power, road and rail connectivity.

What issues were agreed upon

It was President Wickremesinghe who suggested a land bridge between India and Sri Lanka on the possible 27 km long Rameswaram-Talai Mannar alignment, which was immediately accepted by PM Modi. Both the countries have decided to cooperate in the development of ports and logistics infrastructure in Colombo, Trincomalee and Kankesanthurai with mutual understanding as part of maritime connectivity.
