Indian Gave Up Citizenship: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has given very important information in the Lok Sabha about Indians going abroad from India. S Jaishankar told in the Lok Sabha that till now more than 87,000 Indians have given up their citizenship. Giving a written answer to a question, the External Affairs Minister said that this number has been recorded till June 2023.
S Jaishankar said that with these figures, since 2011, more than 17.50 lakh Indians have given up their Indian citizenship. People who leave the country have now become citizens of the country where they have settled.
What is the reason for giving up citizenship?
Jaishankar said that many of them have opted for foreign citizenship due to personal convenience. In addition, the number of Indian nationals searching for a global workplace has been significant in the last two decades. India does not offer dual citizenship. Due to which when Indians go abroad, they sometimes need to give up their Indian citizenship in order to secure PR for the country they have gone to.
How many gave up citizenship at different times?
The Foreign Minister said in the Lok Sabha that in 2022, 2,25,620 Indians gave up their citizenship while in 2021 their number was 1,63,370 and in 2020, 85,256. Whereas in 2019, 1,44,017, 1,34,561 in 2018, 1,33,049 in 2017, 1,41,603 Indians in 2016 gave up their citizenship. Apart from this, in 2015, 1,31,489 and in 2014, 1,29,328 Indians gave up their citizenship.
Which country are people liking?
The information given on the official website of the Ministry of External Affairs gives an idea about which country is liked the most by Indians living abroad leaving India. According to the official website of the Ministry of External Affairs, in 2021, a total of 78,284 people got US citizenship.
It was told that Indians are liking Australia at number two. According to the data of 2021, 23,533 people got the citizenship of Australia. Apart from this, Canada is at number three. Where in 2021, 21,597 people became citizens of Canada. People’s choice at number four and fifth are UK and Italy.
